Smile on Impact: Some say his parents were sea monsters, although that has little relevance to his name. The 26 year old Melbourne producer, Arlo Picasso has been creating and recording music, since the invention of electricity, in 1997. At this time, he was 14 and barely out of diapers. He began, by constructing primitive guitars from gourds and turtle shells, when this proved useless, he switched to a Pentium 100 and the freeware DOS program Fasttracker2.
As technology progressed, so did our protagonist. However his initial passion for sampling from VHS, Vinyl (and anything he could get his hands on) remained unbreakable. In 2006, after a long stint as a cucumber, Arlo’s passion for production, lead him back to electronic music. He then formed Smile on Impact and has since played alongside, some of the biggest names in the scene, such as Miles Dyson, DJ Hyper, Deekline and Wizard. He is one of the innovators of breakbeat in Melbourne and has helped make ‘Bass Camp’ at Lounge the pinnacle of Breaks parties in the city.
Arlo is also the face of Projuice.org, an online TV show for guerrilla producers of Music Video and Multimedia. Pro Juice has been generating some incredible success with producers all over the world frequenting the site, for its high quality and entertaining, tips and techniques. ‘Wisdom Teeth’ was Smile on Impact’s forth release in 2008 after, Where’s My Dollar?, The Death of Vinyl (album) and I Found Your Mum in the $2 Bin.
In that track, Arlo confronts Melbourne roots trio “The April Maze” and converts a humble, heartfelt folk song into an electro-rave anthem. The release spent ten weeks in the Aria Club Charts and received massive support from DJs in Australia and Internationally. The next single from ‘Smile on Impact’ is the groove-tastic ‘Stop!’ A fresh mix of disco glam and vintage dirt. The release include dance floor remixes by Timothy Allan of the duo ‘Hong Kong Blondes’, Tony Palmer from Hungary and the mysterious ‘Science of Night’ from Estonia. The ‘Terror Dub’ remix from Smile on Impact, is a breakbeat anthem in the making.
If you believe in underground music, ‘Stop!’ is a prime example of the quality of production and song writing currently revolutionising the music scene. All signs are; Smile on Impact has the arrogance, talent and tenacity to remain one of Australia’s most exciting new producers.
