Unsuspecting birthday boys and girls have been the receiving end of hilarious and embarrassing punks in public since D’Ultimate Birthday Bash by DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (“DiGi”), organised in collaboration with Mypartners Communications was announced. The guerrilla-style birthday punks were carried out to encourage people to celebrate their friends’ birthdays differently, leading up to D’Ultimate Birthday Bash on 3 October 2009 at Bar Celona, Sunway Pyramid.
Suitably named as ”D’Ultimate Birthday Punk”, these on-ground missions were ideated from the common practice of giving “birthday treats” or playing tricks on people who are about to celebrate their birthday. Managing Director of Mypartners Communications, Patrick Wee, said: “Birthday tricks are considered part of the ‘tradition’ in birthday celebrations, simply because it is fun and leaves behind unforgettable memories. We adopted the idea as we believe that it will resonate with many, especially amongst the fun-loving and thrill-seeking youths.”
DiGi’s Head of CRM and Analytics, Francis Chang, said: “In addition to enjoying privileges such as Birthday Bonus, DiGi customers can now a more memorable birthday, living up to our promise of listening to our customers’ feedback.”On the birthday punk mechanics, Wee further explained: “We started spreading the word via Facebook and e-mails to personal friends, scouting for nominations. Within days, we received an overwhelming response from as far as Kuching.”
Once a birthday punk candidate is identified, a suitable scenario is developed with the help of the candidate’s close friends. Roping in the candidate’s friends, the punk act is carried out to create an ‘unforgettable’ pre-birthday experience. The punk acts usually include ”Scary”, “Embarrassing” to ”Oh-My-God-It’s-Messy” stunts, where the birthday victim will be caught when they least suspect it.
The punk videos are then uploaded to D’Ultimate Birthday Bash by DiGi Channel on YouTube @ www.youtube.com/ultimatebirthdaybash for public viewing. There are also other original videos, such as ‘Happy Birthday’ shout-out clips recorded by Joey G, Liang, and Hunny Madu. “Blogger’s sexy bums writing” clips that were recorded at the recent D’Ultimate Birthday Bash Bloggers Gathering can be found on the same channel. Besides the birthday punk missions, two online activities were also activated. The first is ”D’Ultimate Birthday Wish”, an online contest for participants to submit their birthday wishes for a chance to win two grand prizes of RM3,000 worth of birthday treats each, and secondly, “D’Ultimate Birthday Meme” for bloggers to participate and win mystery weekly prizes.
