1. First of all, tell us how did you guys get started with the band?
Martin Johnson started the band with some other musicians and eventually recruited Blacko in 2006, while they were busking in Tokyo as a pair they were approached by Rinamame who expressed interest in playing with them. After one session in the studio with her it was decided to start playing as an acoustic 3 piece. We continued like this until 2010 gradually gaining fans and support for our rocking live shows. When we were finally offered a recording contract by an independent label in Japan (Vivid Sound) we recruited a bass player and haven’t looked back since.
2. How many group members are there in Johnsons Motorcar?
Johnsons Motorcar is a 4 piece. Martin Johnson (US) on violin and vocals, Blacko (IRL) on guitar, Coleman Bayliss (AUS) on bass and Rinamame (JPN) on drums.
3. Tell us a little more about your music.
Johnsons Motorcar takes traditional Irish/Celtic songs and tunes and injects them with some serious rock’n’roll. We like our music very up tempo but we also have a few slower numbers and ballads in our repertoire. We find that our audiences love the sound and they generally dance wildly, jump around and rock out to our music. It seems we have found a very good way to play Irish music for a contemporary audience.
4. When did you guys last perform at?
Our last show was the Snowsplash Festival in the mountains of Gunma, Japan. It is an annual festival for snowboarders and skiers organised by Outdoor Japan magazine.
6. Beer or stout?
Martin likes a single malt whiskey straight, Blacko usually sticks to beer or Guinness if he can get it, Coleman is a traditional Ozzie beer drinker and Rinamame rarely drinks alcohol but loves sweet tea.
7. What are your goals have you set for the next three years?
We are planning to get back into the studio this year as it’s been nearly 2 years since we recorded together. Outside of that we really hope to do more shows both here and outside of Japan especially other Asian countries, Australia and Europe.
8. Where can our readers find out more about you?
We’re hoping to test run a new type of website soon but for the moment the best way to keep up with us is to like us on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/JohnsonsMotorcar
