Whether there’s something in the water is still up for debate, but Sweden has consistently provided some of the most revered producers of our modern age, a trend that continues with WDL and his latest track, the Hype Machine #1 ‘Stardust’.
“There genuinely isn’t another record like this on the beat right now… WDL’s brand of jazz soaked trip-hop truly hits the spot” – Dancing Astronaut
The first single to come from WDL’s debut artist album, ’Stardust’ is a trip-hop, jazz-funk-infused cut that uses strings, lazy piano and shuffling percussion to exquisite effect, beautifully elevated by WDL’s collaboration with Swedish vocalist, lyricist and songwriter Elliphant. An artist who has been increasingly on the radar since 2012’s ‘Tekkno Scene’ EP, Elliphant effortlessly slices her way between spitting rhythms and sultry vocals in equal measure, juxtaposing undulating emotion and dazzling energy as she goes. Shifting the vocal and rhythmic tempo back and forth with delicate precision, WDL crafts a hypnotic single that carries the warmth of summer through into the cozy confines of autumn and winter.
The man behind WDL is Johan Wedel. Producing for the past decade, he has found his true calling through the WDL project. Gaining critical acclaim this year for his Legotrap remix of MØ’s ‘Pilgrim’, remix of Tove Lo’s ‘Talking Body’ and original track ‘Bob’s Beat’ which was chosen as the official anthem of the 2015 Cricket World Cup, ‘Stardust’ marks the next chapter in his career and paves the way for his album next year.
