Interview with B.A.T.E

B.A.T.E., made up of local duo Wai Hong and Ethan Curzon, are two fast rising nu-breeds aspiring to be the next big DJ duo in the local scene. Despite being relatively new, B.A.T.E. are no strangers to Kuala Lumpur party goers. They’ll be spinning some eletrifying dance beats for H-Artistry Art Of Mixing 2012. Check out the interview after the break.

Hello B.A.T.E. First of all, tell us how you guys started off with DJing? How did you come up with B.A.T.E as your stage name?
BATE: Ethan Curzon was studying in Perth and Wai Hong was in Kuala Lumpur, we shared same friends and partied at the same venues together but never really talked. We both had taken Djing lessons from Goldsounds DJ Division which lead to both of us hooking up as a duo. Organizing private parties etc. and one thing led to another and here we are playing for H-Artistry. We were close friends with Pestle & Mortar, a local clothing company and we came about the t-shirt box packaging. In the “About Us” description there was 2 words that caught our eyes which were “brains & eye” and that’s how we came up with “Brains & The Eye (B.AT.E)”. Random much? Haha!

What is your favourite track of the minute?
WH: Zedd feat. Matthew Koma – Spectrum (Original Mix)
EC: Deniz Koyu – Bong (Original Mix)

Do you guys take up on any residencies at nightspots around town?
BATE: We currently play at clubs around KL, so keep updated with our Facebook page @ facebook.com/ BrainsAndTheEye or follow us on twitter @EthanCurzon & @YeohWaiHong for latest updates on our gigs.

What genre of music do you play?
BATE: Electro House, Techno, Moombahton and everything in between! Come check it out our set at H-Artistry Malaysia on September 8 at KWC @ Level 15, KL. We are gonna kick start the event at 8pm –10.30pm for this super-clubbing experience! So come early and check us out! For a listen to what we play, check out our sounds at www.soundcloud.com/batemusic .

Do you have any idols? Why do they inspire you?
EC: Steve Aoki, cause I used to attend his gigs when I was younger and just watching him with his incredible showmanship made me say “THIS IS WHAT I GOTTA DO AND I WANNA DO”.
WH: Boys Noize, watching him perform and listening to his track selections is just amazing! He’s really good at what he does and he’s one of the most influential DJ I’ve come across. He’s definitely one real special DJ/Producer.

What are your plans for the rest of 2012?
We had a lot of plans for 2012 to play at certain clubs and also for big events, and believe it or not one of them was H-Artistry’s Global Art Of Mixing event. We are super grateful for this opportunity to showcase our talent to the people of Kuala Lumpur and to push ourselves to be better Djs. We have also ventured into music production, which is one of our bigger highlights and aims for 2012. So watch our space on Facebook. www.facebook.com/BrainsAndTheEye
